The Kamakhya Devi Temple is a Hindu temple, situated in Assam, India, dedicated to the Goddess Kamakhya Mata, one of the oldest shakti peeths.

Kamakhya Devi Temple in Assam is considered one of the oldest among the 52 shakti peeths of India.

The temple is situated at the peak of Nilanchal Parvat in the Western direction of Guwahati city.

Some Inside Details Of Kamakhya Temple

1.There is no statue, idol or image of Devi in the temple, but in the corner of the cave in the temple, there is sculptured image of the yoni or Vagina of the goddess, which is covered with a silk cloth which is the object of worship and reverence.

2.The temple has three main chambers. The chamber in west direction is large and rectangular in shape but not used by general pilgrims for worship. The central chamber is of square shape with a small idol of Devi, a later inclusion. The sculpted images of Nara Narayana are inscribed on the walls of the central chamber.

3.The middle chamber takes step to the sanctum called as Garbha Griha of the temple; it is in the form of cave which consists a Vagina-shaped orifice in the bedrock.

4. A natural spring in the garbha-griha keeps the stone image moist.

SECRET Real Stories

Story - 1

Devi Sati was born to king Daksha after he prayed to Maa Shakti for a child. Maa Shakti said i ll be born to you as a daughter but later when i grow up you have to make me marry lord Shiva, since this the aim for which i ll be born. king Daksha hated lord Shiva .It is said that Devi Sati married to Lord Shiva against the wish of her father, king Daksha. Once king Daksha was organizing a yagna, but he didn’t invite Devi Sati and her Husband lord Shiva. Sati became very upset knowing that, because her own father didnt invite her for the yagna, but she still went against the wish of her husband to her father’s palace. When she reached at her father’s home, her father king Daksha insulted her and Lord Shiva. Sati couldn’t bear this disrespect for her husband, so she jumped off in the fire of Yagna and killed herself.

When Lord Shiva got to know about this incident, he got very furious. Disgruntled Shiva holding the dead body of Sati in his arms started Tandav, the dance of destruction of the universe. Then, Lord Vishu came up to save the universe; he cut the body of Sati into pieces with his weapon called Sudarshan chakra. Different parts of Sati fell at different places these places are known as shakti peeths in India. there are 52 shakti peeths in india.

In Kamakhya temple the Vagina or yoni of the Goddess fell, so the scripture or image of Yoni is found in the Kamakhya temple, there is water all around this scripture or image of yoni.

STORY-2

According to Kalika-Puran, There was a Aryan King called Narakasura who was the first king of the Aryans, who fell in love with Goddess Kamakhya because she was divinely beautiful. He became so much stubborn and decided to marry the goddess. Goddess became angry and put a condition before the king that if he could build a staircase from the bottom of the Nilanchal Hill to the entrance of the temple within one night, then she would definately marry him.

Narakasura accepted this challenge and tried all with his might and effort to do this daunting and seeming unachievable task. He was almost about to complete the job, right then Devi got panic-stricken seeing the king's work, so she played a trick on him.

Devi strangled a cock and made it voice like crow to give the untimely impression of dawn to Naraka. Deceived by the trick of Devi, Naraka thought it was a vain job and left his work half way through. Later he somehow came to know it and chased the cock and killed it in a place, the place is now known as Kukurakata, situated in Darrang District in Assam. The incomplete staircase today is known as Mekhelajua path.

STORY-3

During the reign of a Coochbehar king, in ancient times there was a priest who took care of the kamakhya temple and was a devotee of the goddess kamakhya. every evening time , when every one left the temple , the priest would close all the doors and gates of the temple and when he was alone inside the temple, he then chants a mantra and starts to pray to goddess kamakhya. goddess kamakhya then gets excited by the mantra and appears before the priest naked and dances before him. This happens everyday every evening and people of the village hears the chanchan sound of the ghungroo" but they are not allowed to see or know about it. only the priest sees and knows about it. one day the king came to know about it.. he then calls the priest to know about it that happens every evening inside the temple. the priest refuses to answer , but the king forces the priest to answer king’questions or else the priest would be killed. the priest then narrates the whole incident to the king. the king then decides to see the goddess with his own eyes and orders the priest to invite him too. but the priest refuses but he was then again forced to do that. the priest knows goddess wont appear before the king so he makes a plan for it. one evening the priest after closing all doors and gates wen he is alone invites the king alone and tells him remain hidden and watch secretly the goddess. the king hides himself and starts to watch secretly. the priest then weepingly against his wishes chants the mantra and prays to goddess kamakhya. goddess apears before him naked and starts to dance before him. but the goddess comes to know about the king’s presence and she fell on the floor . goddess becomes very angry and at that moment she turns the priest into a stone and curses the king that the king and his future generation will never be able to step inside the kamakhya temple and if they did they will be die and then she vanishes. even today the king’s future generation or generation after generation is still there somewhere in lower assam, but they still having the curse of the goddess Kamakhya that they cannot enter the temple or else they will die.

STORY-4

According to the history of assam, when the muslim ruler king Kalapahar of Bengal destroyed the Kamakhaya temple. The current temple of Kamakhya was set up by Coochbehar king, Naranarayan in the year 1665; i.e. 17th century. During the 16th century the temple got destroyed re-builded by the king. it was said that the king sacrificed more than 100 people to rebuild this temple.

STORY-5

It was said that during ancient times , boros and kacharis tribe of assam worshiped devi kamakhya as their goddess in the form of a stone idol. there wasn't any temple built at that time. at that time kamakhya was called "ka-mei-kha" in their language. later when the aryans came into India and then assam, they built the temple and named the temple "kamakhya" while converting into sanskrit language.

The ahoms also played a important role in building this temple. The Ahom king Gadadhar Singha built the other remaining temples near to the main temple and also made it very important for the people to worship Kamakhya Devi. he also made it tax free. the priest doesnt have to pay taxes to the king for the temple.
